We are seeking Foochow (also called Fuzhounese, Fuzhou dialect, or Foo Chow) Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Foochow is a rare Chinese dialect of the Min Dong language group, spoken in Fuzhou (Fujian Province, China) and diaspora communities, and is frequently required in asylum and immigration interviews.

Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time Foochow (Fuzhounese) ↔ English telephonic interpretation for USCIS officers, applicants, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure interpretations are accurate, impartial, and culturally appropriate in immigration, asylum, and legal contexts.
  • Maintain confidentiality under USCIS/DHS interpreter standards.
  • Handle both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation requests.
  • Participate in training, compliance refreshers, and quality assurance audits.
Qualifications

  • Native or near-native fluency in Foochow (Fuzhounese) and English.
  • 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, asylum, community, or government preferred).
  • Familiarity with Chinese dialect variations (Mandarin and Cantonese knowledge is a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of interpreter ethics, neutrality, and confidentiality.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 security clearance.
